Password Knowledge–Best Practices

Password Knowledge–Best Practices

Unfortunately, our research shows that most individuals use the same password for all or most anything that requires a password. The reason is obvious, “because we don’t want to memorize or forget other passwords for other things.” This is an extremely high-risk practice for individuals, but especially for businesses and dispensaries. For example, an individual who happens to see you type in your username and password for your email account and then tries to gain access to your bank account, email account, and more. Even changing your password by 1 letter or 1 number for different accounts is now not as effective since Hackers now use software that attempts to use your username and password on your various accounts that can manipulate and change your username and password until it chooses the correct one, then gains access to your account. You might be thinking, “how would they know who I bank with?” Hackers have found clever ways to quickly try the most prominent financial institutions within your area to figure out which one you have an account with.

  • Changing your password by just one character is not as safe as having a completely or drastically different password for all separate accounts.

The Helix Cannabis Security team specializes in digital security systems and business security training course. We highly recommend the following practices when choosing a password:

AVOID

  • Using your name or anyone in your families
  • Phone number
  • Social security number
  • Birthdays or numbers that simply ascend or descend from 0 to 9 (i.e. 0123456789 or 9876543210)

USE

  • Upper and lower case letters
  • Numbers in coordination with special characters/symbols (i.e. 1*9&2^8%3$7#[email protected]!)
  • Use a minimum of 8 characters. The general rule is that the longer the password, the more difficult it will be for Hackers to crack it

VERY IMPORTANT

Rather than telling you horror stories or explaining the reasons why you should never give out your password, Helix Cannabis Security stands by a simple policy: Do not give anyone your password(s).
